It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
