It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
