It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
