It may look like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
