It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
