It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
