It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
