It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
