It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
