It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
