It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
