It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
