It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
