It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
