letter or recommendation template
It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
