It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
