It might look to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
