It may seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
