It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
