It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
