It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
