It may seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
