It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
