It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
