It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
