It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
