It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
