It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
