It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
