It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
