It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
