It might seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
