It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
