It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
