It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
