It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
