It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
