It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
