It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
