It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
