It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
