It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
