It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
