It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
