It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
