It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
