It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
