It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
