It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
