It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
